When I got home and was able to take a closer look I realized that the head of the tiny screw which sits under the rewind crank arm and goes into the centre of the rewind knob has sheared off. +1 That's a feature of all manual cameras I have ever used: pressing the rewind button disengages the film advance mechanism, so pulling the lever only resets the shutter, setting you up for a double exposure.
